High Water Usage
Is your water bill higher than usual? Small leaks in your home can quickly add up to many gallons lost. Most leaks are easy to find, but some can go undetected. If your bill is unusually high, a little investigation can save both water and money.
The Toilet
It is not uncommon to lose more than 2,000 gallons a week due to a small toilet leak. You can check for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank, wait overnight and if the food coloring shows up in the toilet bowl then you have a leak that needs to be repaired. Remember to not use the toilet while the toilet has food coloring inside the tank!
Dishwasher &/or Clothes Washer
- Look for drips or stains underneath or behind these appliances. Indoor and outdoor faucets, water softeners, ice makers, and humidifiers can also leak.
- Don't flush your water down the drain! Conserving water not only helps our environment, but can also help you save money on your monthly utility bill. Here are easy tips for saving:
- Make it a full load. Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
- Turn it off! Don't run water while brushing your teeth and save up to 25 gallons a month.
- Water wisely. Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation.
