Overview

The Town Council comprises five members elected by residents living within the Town of Brownsburg limits to serve four-year staggered terms. Each Councilor represents one of the Town's five Wards.

Under Indiana Code 36-5-2-9, the powers granted to the Town Council are the ability to:

  • Adopt and use a common seal
  • Adopt ordinances and resolutions for the performance functions of the Town
  • Purchase, hold, and convey any interest in property for the use of the Town

Under IC 36-5-2-11, the Town Council may issue bonds to procure money to exercise the Town's powers and pay Town debts. However, the Town may not issue bonds to procure money to pay current expenses.

Under IC 36-5-3-4, the Town Council adopts an annual budget.

Town Districts

The Town of Brownsburg is split up into five Council districts. Districts determine which constituents are represented by respective Council members based on their residential addresses.

Every decade, following certification of federal census data, Indiana Code requires the Town Council to redraw its legislative districts so each district is substantially equal in population. This process, called redistricting, is important in ensuring that each Town Council member represents about the same number of constituents.

Residents can use the map below to find their ward.

Park Authority

The Park Authority Board comprises of five members of the Town Council. Its primary role is establishing policies and priorities for the Brownsburg Parks Department. The Park Authority also helps maintain and update long-term plans.

Meetings

The Park Authority meets monthly on the second and fourth Thursday at 7 p.m., during Town Council meetings. All meetings are open to the public at Brownsburg Town Hall, 61 N. Green St.
