Town Council Legislative Redistricting
Every decade, following certification of federal census data, Indiana Code requires the Town Council to redraw its legislative districts so each district is substantially equal in population. This process, called redistricting, is important in ensuring that each Town Council member represents about the same number of constituents.
Redistricting determines which constituents are represented by respective Council members based on their residential addresses within the Town of Brownsburg. Brownsburg currently has five Council districts.
What do the existing council districts look like?
A map of the Town's current council districts is available online.
What factors have to be considered when a city goes through a redistricting process?
Indiana Code section 36-5-2-4.1 establishes certain minimal criteria for the redistricting process for a town including the following standards:
- The district must be composed of contiguous territory.
- The district must be reasonably compact.
- The district does not cross a census block boundary except in specified circumstances.
- The district must contact, as nearly as possible, equal population.

How will residents be notified about redistricting?
Residents can sign up for alerts to get immediate notification of upcoming public hearings and workshops. This web page will be updated with all relevant information about the redistricting process and maps will be posted online before adoption.
What is the approval process for adopting the new district map?
A proposed new council district map is considered by the Town Council in light of public comment received. Following public comments, the Council can vote to adopt a new map for the districts, which would be effective for 2024 primary and general elections.
How can I get involved?
The Town Council will be holding hearings and workshops to receive public input on where district lines should be drawn. Residents of the public can provide comment to Town Council members, offering feedback, questions, and comments on the proposed map and any alternatives that may be considered.
